“The Path as an Idea....as an Experience for the Senses” - Lawrence Halprin

1. As a connector between points (home to work)

2. The path as a release (for pleasure)

3. The path as exercise (walking)

4. The path as an experience for the senses (kinesthetics)

5. The path as a series of events (interactions)

This project was inspired by a notebook sketch from Lawrence Halprin. In his sketch, he described the path as an idea… as an experience for the senses. Situated on 392 Crown Street, the site lies on a boundary condition that separates Yale from predominantly low income, African-American and Latinx communities. Conceptually, the design draws from the choreographic ideas of Anna Halprin; as a dancer who worked with terminally ill patients she used movement, art, and experiential connections to nature as sources for healing. The path aspires to become a part of one’s everyday journey, so that bodies can return, roam and wander whenever they please.
